Will Smith Running in the Trailer for Apple’s Emancipation

Antoine Fuqua recently screened his upcoming movie on Apple TV+ Releasewhich stars Will Smith as the real slave who is best known for taking a picture published in Harper’s Weekly which showed his horribly horrifying back (which is crucial evidence of the anti-slavery campaigns of the time), and everyone seems to have nothing but positive things to say about it. Entertainment Weekly Derek Johnson quotes, the head of the NAACP, saying he “can’t begin to see how powerful that is for our community and our history.” Smith also noted that he has rejected films about slavery in the past, but “this is not a film about slavery.” Instead, he says, “This is a movie about freedom. This is a movie about resilience. This is a movie about faith.”

Limit Share a trailer about the movie and chatted with Fuqua about it, and while he stopped saying he was thinking Release It’s his best movie, he admits when he finished he said it was his “most powerful work” and “definitely” his “most important” movie. Apple seems to agree with that last part, with Fuqua saying Limit that the company “never stopped talking about releasing the movie” even after Will Smith slapped Chris Rock at the Oscars and even after Production moved entirely from Georgia to Louisiana.

Emancipation – Official teaser | + Apple TV

It’s not hard to see why Apple didn’t want to let distractions sideline this project after watching the trailer, which is pretty heavy and leans heavily on what appears to be a very intense performance from Will Smith – who, let’s not forget, also won a Best Actor Oscar earlier. From this year in addition to the other thing.

Release It opens in theaters December 2 and will premiere on AppleTV+ on December 9.
