One year after returning to the presidency, Putin announced his divorce from his wife, Lyudmila, who has had two daughters since 1983.

Crimea annexation and support for Bashar al-Assad

In 2014, after the occupation by Russian troops, the Russian president encouraged the annexation of the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea. In 2015, Putin extended his military support to the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
