First Steps: From KGB to Public Life
Vladimir Putin, President of Russia, was a child when he lived in Leningrad in the 1960s.

New election and divorce

In 2012, he was re-elected president in the first round for a six-year term. The election was marked by unprecedented protests by the opposition.
One year after returning to the presidency, Putin announced his divorce from his wife, Lyudmila, who has had two daughters since 1983.
Crimea annexation and support for Bashar al-Assad
In 2014, after the occupation by Russian troops, the Russian president encouraged the annexation of the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea. In 2015, Putin extended his military support to the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

The President of Russia was re-elected in the March 18, 2018 elections with a broad advantage over his opponents. He received 76% of the vote and received more than 56 million votes, breaking his 2004 record.

May be in power until 2036
In 2021, Putin will sign a law that would allow him to hold two more positions after his current term ends in 2024. Russia’s president can stay in power until 2036.
On February 21, 2022, Vladimir Putin Announced the recognition of two separate territories of Ukraine – Luhansk and Donetsk.
The move escalated tensions between Russia and Ukraine, which began with Ukraine’s intention to join the US-led coalition NATO.
