The U.S. government hopes that Kiev’s position in future negotiations will improve if the Ukrainian military threatens Russia’s control of Crimea.
Washington, January 19 (Sputnik) – The Biden administration is considering giving Ukraine the weapons it needs to target the Crimean peninsula, which has proven instrumental to Russia’s moves during the ongoing special military operation, The New York Times reported.
The US government hopes that Kiev’s position in future negotiations will improve if the Ukrainian military threatens Russia’s control of Crimea, although such a move could increase the risk of escalating the conflict, a report said on Wednesday.
Government officials have been discussing with Ukrainian officials the use of US-supplied weapons, including High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS) and Bradley Fighting Vehicles, to cover targets such as the main land bridge connecting Crimea with the rest of Russia. .
Until now, the Biden administration has been reluctant to provide long-range missiles to Ukraine, fearing that such a move would provoke Russia and widen the conflict should Kiev attack Crimea.
