New Zealand police have shot dead at least six people at a supermarket in Auckland on Friday.
New Zealand Prime Minister Jacintha Orton said the attack was a terrorist act.
“A violent militant has launched a terrorist attack on New Zealand’s innocents,” Artern said.
The attacker was a Sri Lankan citizen who had been in New Zealand for 10 years. He has been under police surveillance for five years for his links to the Islamic State.
The man was killed shortly after the attack began. Police said the man acted alone.
“It’s disgusting, it’s wrong. It was done by an individual, not a belief,” Artern lamented. “He alone is responsible for these actions.”
New Lynn showed customers at a supermarket during a video attack posted on social media. “Someone here has a knife … he has a knife,” one woman shouts. “Someone was stabbed!”
Of the six injured, three are in critical condition and one is in critical condition, the ambulance service said.
