Steelers claim waivers for WR Miles Boykin

The Pittsburgh Steelers have released former Baltimore Ravens’ WR Miles Boykin from waivers, according to NFL Network’s Mike Garavolo.

Boykin was waived by the Ravens over the weekend. In the third round in 2019, Boykin fell behind in Baltimore but found the end zone when he was targeted. In his three-year career with the team, he made seven touchdowns in 33 receptions.

But he lost in particular last season, collecting only one pass for six yards in eight games while also struggling with a hamstring injury to start the season. Once in good health, he scored 144 shots (63%) in special teams. In five career games against the Steelers, Boykin has two passes for 20 yards and one touchdown, a red-zone hurdle in a mismatch against LB Vince Williams (as you can see in the photo above).

By asking him to compromise, the Steelers will take away his contract, which is set to pay him $2.54 million this year after qualifying for an assured performance ladder in the NFL.

Boykin was a height/weight/speed monster outside of Notre Dame. At roughly 6’4″, 220 pounds, Boykin shot a 4.42 40 with a 43.5-inch vertical jump, 11’8 wide jump, and impressive shuttle times. Pittsburgh, apparently, showed a lot of interest in the initial draft, including bringing him on a pre-draft visit. They eventually chose Deontay Johnson instead as a 1:1 replacement for Antonio Brown.

Boykin will add depth in a spacious, slim reception room. The Steelers lost JuJu Smith-Schuster, Ray-Ray McCloud and James Washington this off season, and before today, they had yet to add to their reception room apart from special team/return player Gunner Olszewski. Recipients with NFL experience in the Steelers room now include Deontay Johnson, Chase Claepool (a Boykins Notre Dame teammate), Anthony Miller, Cody White, Gunner Olzewski and Stephen Sims.

This signature is a bit predictable. Dave Bryan put all the reasons behind it Boykin could be attractive to Pittsburgh. From his lips to Kevin Colbert’s ears.
