Spanish investigators began an investigation this Thursday (24) Death of McAfee antivirus creator, Died in his cell on Wednesday (23), just hours after a Spanish court approved his extradition to the United States.
The body of 75-year-old John McAfee was found in his cell at Bryans 2 prison near Barcelona (northeast) around 7pm (until 2pm), a prison spokesman in Catalonia described as a “suicide”.
Since his arrest in October, when he was about to board a flight to Istanbul, Catalan authorities have confirmed that the prisoner was McAfee.
His body was transferred by investigators trying to confirm the cause of death, a regional justice ministry spokesman told AFP on Thursday.
“A death has occurred, which indicates suicide, but confirmation will come through the autopsy,” which is expected to happen in the next few days, a spokesman said.
Delivery to the United States
John McCaffey, who was charged in the United States with tax fraud, made his fortune in the 1980s with an antivirus bearing his name. He later became a cryptocurrency guru, followed by about a million people on Twitter.
He was arrested at Barcelona airport in October 2020 after an American lawyer filed a lawsuit against him for failing to declare millions of dollars in revenue by promoting cryptocurrencies, consulting services, conferences and selling rights to a documentary about his life.
U.S. officials issued an Interpol arrest warrant and demanded his extradition.
If convicted, he faces up to 30 years in prison.
His extradition to the United States gave him the opportunity to appeal through the Spanish courts. The recognition still had to be approved by the Spanish government.
According to a US extradition request filed in November, McAfee earned more than $ 12 million in taxes between 2014 and 2018.
“To conceal his income and assets from the tax service (…) the defendant ordered Orange to keep a portion of his income and assets in his name,” the document added.
Since becoming a cryptocurrency guru, he has been embroiled in various controversies such as drugs, weapons and murder.
On its popular Twitter account, McAfee defined himself as “a lover of women, adventures and mysteries”.
In a tweet on June 16, he said U.S. officials believe there are “hidden cryptocurrencies.”
“I like them,” he said. “The rest of my property has been confiscated. My friends have disappeared for fear of association. I have nothing. However, I have no regrets,” he wrote.
His wife, Janice, complained that he was “in poor health” in a Spanish prison and that it took him too long to receive medical treatment.
“U.S. authorities are determined to let John die in prison,” he tweeted last Sunday.
McAfee caused controversy when he moved to Belize in 2012, where his next-door neighbor was mysteriously murdered. The case is still pending.
Police who tried to investigate McAfee in the case found that the businessman was living with a 17-year-old girl and that there were guns in his house. Later, he disappeared.
The family of the deceased neighbor has appealed against McCaffie’s “wrongful death.” A Florida court found him guilty and ordered him to pay more than $ 25 million.
McAfee ran away for several months, and in 2015 he was arrested in the United States for driving under the influence of drugs. He left the country again in 2019.
