TheOn Sunday afternoon, about 200 Republicans gathered in a small hall in the southern city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to support far-right gubernatorial candidate Doug Mastriano and his campaign to “reclaim freedom.”
With hats emblazoned with the slogan ‘MAGA – Make America Great Again’, Donald Trump’s iconic campaign slogan, “Make America Great Again”, Republicans slammed incumbent President Joe Biden. Borders are open” and “overwhelming the country”.
To Lusa, Michael, a fish market worker, goes further and accuses the Democratic government of “trying to implement a New World Order in America” and “wanting to destroy Western civilization.”
“Communists, liberals, they want to destroy Western civilization. They want one world religion and one world government. They want to control our lives. On the Republican side, I believe we are here to defeat that objective. America as a country,” he said.
The 53-year-old, who weaves scathing assessments of “traditional journalism” that “does nothing but lies,” reinforced Republican claims that the 2020 presidential election was stolen from Trump and said he hoped the former head of state would return. Go to the White House in 2024 and free America from this “New World Order, Communism and Marxism”.
“We have to go to the polls and vote by the millions, because they, the Democratic Party, rig the elections. If we go by the millions and vote, they can’t change that. We have to vote. That’s it. But they want to implement communism in America, and that’s what’s going on right now. A lot of people don’t know that. . . a lot of people are turning a blind eye,” he said.
Asked by Lusa if she supported the attack on the Capitol on January 6, 2021, when Trump supporters tried to block the certification of Joe Biden’s election victory, Michael said he “didn’t pay much attention to that episode.” None of the invaders were armed and the only person killed in the attack was an “unarmed supporter of Donald Trump”.
However, these reports are not true. On the day of the attack, five people were killed and more than 140 police officers were injured, but court documents indicate many of the attackers were armed.
For Susan, a 56-year-old project manager, Tuesday’s midterm elections are “absolutely critical” and America must “return to being a constitutional republic.”
“We need electoral integrity. We need to be energy independent again. We need our economy to grow and we need jobs in Pennsylvania,” he argued.
Amid criticism from Democrats, Republicans called a priest to the stage and offered two unison prayers to “lead Doug Mastriano to victory.”
Mastriano, one of the pro-Trump candidates in these elections, advocates a complete ban on abortion, more oil and natural gas exploration and a complete overhaul of election laws.
One of the event’s organizers — who declined to be identified — told Lusa that about 200 people were there to “restore freedom in Pennsylvania.”
“Our freedom is at stake. The freedom to choose how our children are raised and the freedom to live our lives as we choose,” he said.
Another Republican who attended the event, who did not want to be named, said Philadelphia’s streets have become a “war zone” because of the rise in crime, which “has been going on for years in this administration.”
“The labor movement, the construction people, have lost millions of dollars since Biden took office. Yet the unions continue to support him. But not me!”, he concluded.
Charles Garrow, a Republican political strategist and CEO of Quantum Communications, a Pennsylvania-based public relations firm, was among those who spoke at the event on Mastriano’s behalf, calling the election “crucial.”
“Freedom goes to the polls. We are the last defenders of freedom. Take to the streets, knock on doors, do what you have to do to give Doug Mastriano a win,” he urged.
Tuesday’s midterm elections will determine which party controls Congress in Biden’s final two years, with 36 state governments and many local votes on key issues including abortion and soft drugs.
All 435 seats in the House of Representatives (the lower house of Congress) will be captured – US President Kamala Harris.
The elections could not only change the face of the US Congress, but also bring Donald Trump-supporting governors and local officials to power.
A heavy defeat in the upcoming elections will further complicate the situation for Joe Biden’s second term as president.
