Presidential candidate Nicaragua, Arturo Cruz was detained at the airport in the country’s capital Managua this Saturday (5) after returning from a trip to the United States, according to information provided to Reuters by his team.
The Nicaraguan Ministry of Public Works said the investigation against Cruz was based on “strong evidence that he attacked the Nicaraguan community” but did not give details of what the allegations were.
Cruz, a former ambassador to the United States between 2007 and 2009, was once an ally of the current president Daniel Ortega, Candidate of the Citizens’ Coalition for Independence, is a coalition of right-wing parties backed by businessmen.
Secretary-General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Louis Almacro, demanding the release of Cruz, saying “manipulating the security and judicial forces to arrest opposition candidates” is “unacceptable”.
