The pilot project will be built at a decommissioned coal plant in Wyoming, USA, the country’s largest coal-producing state.
Terrapower explains on its website that the initiative is a new energy production and storage concept that combines a fast sodium reactor with a 345 MW molten salt storage system.
The company claims that the storage system can increase power generation to 500 MW for more than five and a half hours when needed, which is enough to power 400,000 homes.

UCS, a non-profit scientific advocacy group in the United States, has warned that advanced reactors such as the Union of Concern Scientists and Natrium could pose a greater risk than usual.
“The technology of these reactors is undoubtedly different from today’s reactors, but it is not clear which ones are the best,” UCS director Edwin Lyman told Reuters.
