Natrium: Bill Gates and Warren Buffett | What is known about the built nuclear reactor | The world

“An infiltration point for the energy sector”.

Thus the new nuclear reactor model was presented under the title Natrium. The pilot project was developed by Microsoft founder Bill Gates and multi-million dollar investor Warren Buffett.

Increasing renewable energy and resisting climate change is part of Gates’ goal.

Nuclear and renewable ideas are negative. However, small advanced furnaces, which run on fuels other than conventional ones, are seen by some sectors as a key technology without greenhouse gas emissions that can meet the power supply in low wind and wind power generation conditions. The sun.

The natrium, which was delivered during a ceremony on Wednesday (06/02), will be produced by Terra Power, founded by Gates 15 years ago, and Warren Buffett’s Pacific Corp.

“The Natrium reactor and its integrated power system redefine what nuclear power can be: competitive and flexible,” Terrapower says on its website.

The pilot project will be built at a decommissioned coal plant in Wyoming, USA, the country’s largest coal-producing state.

Terrapower explains on its website that the initiative is a new energy production and storage concept that combines a fast sodium reactor with a 345 MW molten salt storage system.

The company claims that the storage system can increase power generation to 500 MW for more than five and a half hours when needed, which is enough to power 400,000 homes.

A nuclear reactor – travel wave type (TWR) – uses reduced uranium or natural uranium as fuel. All non-nuclear equipment will be housed in separate buildings, to reduce installation complexity and cost, forum details.

Terrapower chairman Chris Lewesk explained that it would take seven years to build the pilot plant.

“We need this kind of clean energy in the 2030s,” Levsky said.

Natrium is part of the U.S. Energy Department’s demonstration program of advanced reactors.

According to the Business Insider portal, Terrapower received $ 80 million (approximately $ 400 million) in initial funding from the Department of Energy to demonstrate the project.

The department has promised to provide additional funding for this project in the coming years.

Wyoming Governor Mark Gordon emphasized during the Natrium presentation that this is the “fast and clear path” to the state towards the “negative carbon trail”.

“This small module will power the furnace and reduce overall CO2 emissions. It will also create hundreds of well-paid jobs through the construction and operation of the plant,” he wrote on his Twitter profile.

But these types of projects create some distrust in some sectors.

UCS, a non-profit scientific advocacy group in the United States, has warned that advanced reactors such as the Union of Concern Scientists and Natrium could pose a greater risk than usual.

“The technology of these reactors is undoubtedly different from today’s reactors, but it is not clear which ones are the best,” UCS director Edwin Lyman told Reuters.

“In many cases, they are bad in terms of safety, serious accidents and nuclear proliferation,” Lyman said in a report titled “Improved is always better.”

In the report, the panel warns that fuel for many advanced furnaces must be enriched at a higher rate than conventional fuels. That is, scientists say, the fuel supply chain could be an attractive target for terrorists who want to build a basic nuclear component.

“In order for nuclear power to play a greater role in mitigating climate change, newly built reactors must prove to be safer and cheaper than current ones,” the report explains.

Levsk, President of Terrapavar, argued that plants with these reactors reduce the risks of nuclear proliferation because they reduce access in a common way.
