‘Mu’ variant: WHO begins tracking new corona virus strain

First identified in Colombia, came to Brazil via Copa America. The WHO warns that it is resistant to vaccines, but more research needs to be done

247 – The World Health Organization (WHO) is monitoring a new type of corona virus called “Mu”, also known as B.1.621. There are strains that indicate that the vaccine has the potential to escape the immunity provided by the previous infection. The Report Exame is from the portal.

The strain, first identified in Colombia, already accounts for 4,600 cases in 40 countries, with 2,000 cases in the United States alone. According to the WHO report, Mu “is the galaxy of mutations that represent the potential properties of immune escape.”

According to the report, the major mutation is E484K, which is partly associated with immune escape and is found in beta and gamma, and is present in the N501Y (or Nelly) alpha and may indicate higher transmission.

However, more research needs to be done to confirm whether this strain is actually highly contagious or highly resistant to vaccines.
