More than 40 people were found dead in a truck near the city of San Antonio in the US state of Texas on Monday (27).
Governor Greg Abbott said 42 people had been killed. However, the fire department said it found 46 bodies piled up inside the vehicle.
Firefighters said there were no children among the dead.
Another 16 people were found alive and taken to hospitals in the area, local government officials said. Four of the survivors were children, according to firefighters.
According to the “New York Times” the initial hypothesis was that the victims were immigrants. Everyone in the trailer is believed to have entered the United States illegally.
The nationality of the victims and survivors is not yet known.
Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrader said the Mexican embassy was visiting the scene and did not know the nationality of the victims.
The truck was found near a railroad track in southwestern San Antonio. The city is about 250 km from the US-Mexico border.
San Antonio police are searching for the driver of the vehicle, and they said they have arrested three people. The driver appears to have abandoned the truck.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has launched an investigation.

It is not yet known how people died. There is a heat wave in this part of Texas – this Monday, it recorded a temperature of 39.4ºC. There was no water in the place where the people had gathered.
