Lou Lamorillo did not go with controversial Joel Quinville or Mike Babcock as his replacement for Barry Trotz. He didn’t wait to see what would happen with Pete Debore in Vegas or if Paul Morris wanted to return to training.
Instead, after assigning a new sound in the caption Trotz’s sudden shooting last weekLamoreello has elevated Trotz’s top assistant to the main position, with the islanders announcing Lyn Lambert as their new head coach on Monday morning.
“I’ve had the opportunity to work with Lynn for the past four years, which includes spending time with him on an individual basis when he held the position of interim head coach last season,” Lamoreello said in a press release. “In my opinion, he is the right person to coach this team.”
Lambert, who has worked with Trotz since being promoted to assistant coach with the Predators in 2011-12, served as head coach for the Islanders for a short stint in January when Trotz was out of time after his mother died and tested positive for COVID-19.
Like Trotz, he was with Islanders for four seasons before Monday’s promotion.
It is not clear if Lamoriello has interviewed or spoken with any other job candidates.
Lambert doesn’t have much experience coaching in the National Hockey League other than what he did in the temporary role with the Islanders this season. He last served as a head coach with the AHL’s Milwaukee Admirals from 2007-11.
