India said on Wednesday (23) that there were about 40 cases in the country Variation Do coronavirus delta, Which has a more contagious mutation, and advised states to speed up tests to diagnose corona virus infection. At least 197 cases of mutation, they were called Delta Plus, Found in 11 countries.
Below is what we know about the variant.
What is Delta Plus?
This variant, known as “Delta Plus” in India, was first reported in a public health UK newsletter on 11 June.
She is a subline Delta variant, First detected in India, acquired a spike protein modification called K417N, which is also found in beta variants first identified in South Africa.
Some scientists fear that this mutation, along with other existing features of the delta variant, may further transmit it.
“It is considered interesting because the K417N mutation is in beta variant (line B.1.351), which is said to have anti-inflammatory properties (which inhibit the immune system),” the Indian Ministry of Health said in a communications statement.
Leading Indian virologist Shahid Jameel said K417N treatment is known to reduce the effectiveness of cocktails of monoclonal antibodies.
Where was the mutation found?
As of June 16, at least 197 Delta Plus infections have been diagnosed in 11 countries – UK (36), Canada (1), India (8), Japan (15), Nepal (3), Poland (9), Portugal (22), Russia (1), Switzerland (18), Turkey (1), United States (83).
About 40 cases have been reported in the states of Maharashtra, Kerala and Madhya Pradesh, with India saying on Wednesday that “the impact is not significant”. The oldest case in India is a sample collected on April 5th.
The UK said its first 5 cases were filed on April 26 and were related to people who had traveled or traveled to Nepal and Turkey.
No deaths were reported between the UK and Indian cases.
What are the concerns?
Studies are underway in India and around the world to test the effectiveness of vaccines against this mutation.
“The WHO is monitoring this variation as part of the Delta Variation, and we are doing it for others Types of anxiety With further mutations, “the World Health Organization (WHO) said in a statement to Reuters.
“At present, this variation does not appear to be common and currently accounts for only a small fraction of the delta scenarios … Variations in delta and other circulation are shown to be more of a public health risk because they are highly contagious.” Said.
But the Ministry of Health of India warned that the affected areas may need to improve their public health response by focusing on “monitoring, improved testing, rapid contact monitoring and priority vaccination”.
There are fears that Delta Plus will cause another epidemic in India from the worst eruption in the world recently.
“The mutation will not lead to a third wave in India – it will also depend on the correct behavior of Kovit-19 – but this may also be a factor,” said Tarun Patnagar, a scientist at the state-owned Medical Research Council of India.
