This is technically not the first standard playback device Ikea has announced. Way back in 2018, she announced a turntable In collaboration with Teenage Engineering which she hoped to release the following year. But according to Teen Engineering Support Pagethe player did not reach the final set.

IKEA engineer Carmen Stoatescu alluded to this earlier attempt in an interview about the new record player in IKEA website. “When the question came to me, I just said, ‘We’ve already tried playing a DVD player before, so we can use the same resource maybe? The writing contains some hints about the player’s functionality, such as the fact that it has a built-in speaker, is USB powered and features a replaceable needle and cartridge. In a press release, Ikea also notes that the player will work with Eneby Bluetooth Speaker, but since it doesn’t actually support Bluetooth, it will only work over a wired connection. Otherwise, the technical details are minimal. It is not clear if the record player has built-in speakers or if it is limited to wired output.

We asked Ikea these questions along with questions about the expected cost of the device. It will be available this fall with more than 20 other products from the Obegränsad range.
