Central Florida stores struggle to keep water on shelves before Tropical Storm Ian
Rain and winds hit the western tip of Cuba as Hurricane Ian intensified into a Category 3 storm today, the National Hurricane Center said.
It added that the hurricane was located about 35 miles (55 kilometers) south of the city of Pinar del Rio, Cuba, with maximum winds of 115 miles per hour (185 kilometers per hour).
Authorities in Cuba evacuated 50,000 people, established at least 55 shelters, and rushed emergency personnel. Meanwhile, mandatory evacuations are underway in parts of Florida amid warnings of life-threatening conditions from a Category 4 storm in the coming days.
According to the Hurricane Center, Ian will not slow down in Cuba but will slow over the Gulf of Mexico, getting wider and stronger, “which will have the potential to create significant wind and storm effects along the west coast of Florida.”
There is a risk of flash floods, strong winds, storms up to 10 feet, and potential isolated hurricanes along Florida’s Gulf Coast with impacts beginning up to 36 hours before peak.

The National Hurricane Center has warned of life-threatening storms, strong hurricane winds, flash floods and possible mudslides in parts of western Cuba even today.

“Cuba is expecting strong hurricane-force winds, life-threatening storms as well and torrential rain,” said Daniel Brown, chief specialist at the Hurricane Center.
After passing Cuba, Ian is expected to gain strength over the Gulf of Mexico before hitting Florida early tomorrow as a Category 4 storm with maximum sustained winds of 140 mph (225 kph).
