Google Maps Street View is getting a few upgrades to celebrate the service’s 15th anniversary, and The search giant announced today. The first is a new feature coming to iOS and Android apps that will display historical Street View photos on your phone. The second is a new, more portable camera that Google hopes will make it easier to take Street View photos in the future.

Since 2014With the desktop version of Google Maps, Street View can be used to see how the place has changed over the years. But now, iOS and Android apps will have the service with the same ability. You can access it by tapping anywhere on the screen while in Street View, then selecting “See more dates” to access historical photos of the site. Google announces that the feature will display images dating back to the time Street View was launched in 2007 in locations where it is available.

Google’s second announcement in conjunction with the Street View anniversary is a new, more portable 360-degree camera. Currently, the search giant is using custom cars And Large Backpacks With Camera (called Trekkers) to film the world, but the new camera shrinks all of that functionality down to a device that weighs just under 15 pounds (approximately 6.8 kg) and, in the words of the Google blog, is “about the size of a house cat.”

The camera is designed to make it easier for Google to take Street View photos around the world, allowing it to perform more frequent updates. For example, instead of paying to move cars equipped with dedicated cameras, Google could simply modify its new camera in an existing car. Looking at the Street View data, it’s already collected by attaching existing massive cameras to everything from snowmobiles to venetian gondolaIt’s easy to imagine the wide range of new vehicles that Google should be able to hook the new camera on.

Although Google stresses the portability of the new camera, Street View hardware chief Steven Silverman says there should be some benefits to how each panorama looks, too. “The sensors are of higher quality, they indicate less noise,” Silverman says. “These pictures will be more beautiful.” The seven camera sensors in each camera capture 140-megapixel panoramic views, as before, and while there are no lidar sensors built in by default, Silverman says the camera is designed to be customizable so that it can be added when required.

Street View is a really useful feature (how many of us have discovered a site online before heading to it ourselves) and a fun novelty (with intense competitive scene Much). But for Google, having cameras roaming the streets is also a useful way to improve your Google Maps data. Street View images are used to add newly opened businesses to Google Maps, improve information about opening hours, and provide information about road speed limits.

Silverman says the new camera will be rolled out alongside its existing cars and Trekkers next year.
