The blazes that started last Friday in Klamath National Park have already burned more than 22,000 hectares. The McKinney Fire, as it was named, was favored by unpredictable winds and temperatures of nearly 40ÂșC in the region.

Sheriff’s spokeswoman Courtney Crider said 4,500 people were ordered to evacuate and about 100 structures, ranging from sheds to homes, were affected by the fire.

“The 100-year-old houses that were built in the 1920s are gone,” Roger Terry, who moved to the area in 1977, said in an interview. “Our community hall was completely gutted. The post office was gutted. The family’s loss is high here.”

Nearly 1,300 firefighters are working to extinguish the blaze and protect neighboring communities. In the last few hours, the weather conditions have eased and rains have started falling in the region and there is a possibility of storms, which may contribute to extinguishing the fire.

“Lower temperatures and higher humidity, including rain in some areas of the fire, moderated fire behavior, allowing firefighters to make good progress on the fire yesterday,” officials said in a statement. “In the absence of previously observed explosive fire behavior, firefighters were able to take a more assertive stance and engage directly.”
