Padres promoted Abrams before the series’ opening game Monday against linebacker D at Petco Park, the day after Machado suffered a knockout. Left ankle sprain in Colorado. Machado appears to have avoided much damage to his left leg, and has yet to fall off the injured list. But the IL mission is still a possibility, and Machado was out of the starting line-up on Monday night.
In the meantime, it looks like Abrams will be taking over the bulk of his playing time in Machado’s absence. Abrams was in the lineup hitting eighth and playing a short, with Ha-Seong Kim sliding from shortstop to third base.
“I hope Machado recovers quickly,” Abrams said. “I hope to be back soon.”
Abrams Number 6 in baseball In MLB Pipeline, he broke camp with Padres after Spring training, despite never playing above Double-A. But he struggled in his first spell in the Majors, scoring just .182/.270/.273 with two doubles and one home run in 20 games before being sent off on May 10.
“She sets the record straight,” Abrams said. “These are the major tournaments, a lot of good performances, they drive really well, and I kind of let myself out… It was a bit of a nerve, a bit of everything. It was a learning experience.”
The downgrade to Triple-A clearly had the desired effect on Abrams, who found his shape and downgraded .314/.364/.507 with seven home runs and 28 RBI in his time with Chihuahuas.
“Playing every day, it’s kind of a rhythm, and you can see what works and what doesn’t,” Abrams said.
To make room for the Abrams in the Major League roster, he chose Padres Reis as the right-handed River at Triple-El Paso.
For now, Machado is still on the list, with Padres hoping to be available before the end of the minimum 10-day period he will spend on the injured list. They’re willing to play with a short-handed roster if there’s a prospect of Machado getting back, say, a week from now.
If Padres ultimately decides that Machado needs an IL mission, they can date that mission to Monday, provided they make the move before Thursday’s game against Velez.
