Chile on Thursday recorded 201 deaths from Govt-19, the highest number of deaths since July 2020, bringing the number of infections in the last 24 hours to 35,789, due to the improvement of the Omigran variant.
Since arriving in December last year, the strain has raised the number of victims to an unprecedented number and has recently led to an increase in the number of patients with serious illness and death.
In the last 24 hours, 958 patients have been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), a scene that has not been seen for six months and indicates that there are about 180 beds in such rooms in the country.
The positive rate for PCR tests is 26.8% nationwide and 22.71% in the metropolitan area with the capital, Santiago, inhabiting more than a third of the total population.
Despite Chile having one of the highest vaccination rates in the world, Omigron is advancing: more than 93% (19 million people) have two doses or one dose of complete regulation, and more than 12.7 million people. Already got the booster dose.
The government has also launched a massive administration of fourth doses for those over 55, which will be followed by those over 18 from March.
