Mark Cucurella moved from Brighton to Chelsea It was confirmed in a deal that could amount to £62m. Chelsea are paying a guaranteed £55m left-back and up to another £7m in add-ons.

19-year-old Chelsea defender Levi Colwell has joined Brighton on a season-long loan, and Marcos Alonso is confident Cucurella’s arrival will pave the way for him to move to Barcelona. Alonso is waiting for the green light from Thomas Tuchel.

Cucurella signed a contract until 2028 and Chelsea scored in time for his possible debut on Saturday at Everton. The 24-year-old was also a target for Manchester City, who were not willing to meet the asking price.

Brighton coach Graham Potter said: “We didn’t want to lose Mark but he wanted the chance to play Champions League football with the aim of accelerating his progression into Spain’s World Cup squad. Of course we are disappointed to see Mark leave, but we wish him well for the future. He has achieved An excellent first season in the Premier League, he deservedly won our two Player of the Season awards and it has been an absolute pleasure to work with him.”

Cucurella joined Brighton from Getafe last summer and made one appearance for Spain. Tuchel said one of the benefits of signing was relieving pressure on Ben Chilwell, who was injured in a cross last November.

“He’s young, hungry, mobile, and a very smart player,” the manager said of Cucurella. It helps with depth and quality, and helps Ben escape the stress of: ‘I gotta get it right and we totally need you now. “

Brighton have allowed Shane Duffy to join Fulham on loan after signing Colwell, who spent last season at Huddersfield.
