There are allegations that Americans’ information is being leaked to China
WASHINGTON, March 15 (Reuters) – The Biden administration has demanded that TikTok’s Chinese owners divest their stake in the popular video app or face a US ban, the company told Reuters on Wednesday.
The move is the most dramatic in a series of recent moves by US officials and lawmakers that have raised fears that TikTok user data in the US could be sent to the Chinese government. TikTok, owned by Byte Dance, has more than 100 million users in the US.
This is the first time a potential ban on TikTok has been threatened under the administration of Democratic leader Joe Biden. Biden’s predecessor, Republican Donald Trump, tried to ban TikTok in 2020, but was blocked by US courts.
TikTok spokeswoman Brooke Oberwetter told Reuters the company recently asked the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS), led by the U.S. Treasury, to demand that the app’s Chinese owners sell their shares or face face-off. Possible video usage ban in the US.
