Below is a breakdown of the three nominees for each award in the Major League and National.
Jordan Alvarez, DH/LF, Astros
Alvarez has been one of the top hitters in the MLS again this season. The Astros’ left-footed hitter hit 0.306 with 37 home runs and 97 RBIs, and he and Aaron Judge were the only hitters to post OPS over 1.000. Alvarez’s 1,019 OPS and 187 OPS+ (league 100 average) are both ranked second in the Premier League, behind only the judge. He also added some unforgettable home workouts in the post-season for the World Championship champions.
Aaron Judge, Yankees
Judge’s historic season makes him the best player in the game. He hit 62 home kicks to surpass Roger Maris’ long-standing record of 61 and set a new MLS home record. Judge also nearly won the Triple Crown, topping the AL with 131 RBI and finishing second with a batting average of 311.
Shohei Ohtani, RHP/DH, Angels
The reigning AL MVP continued his historic 2021 two-way season with another star season in ’22. Ohtani became the first player in the World Championship era to qualify for both the batting and pitching league leaderboards. He had 34 home runs, 11 base hits and 95 RBI as a hitter and went 15-9 with a 2.33 ERA and 219 strikes as a pitcher.
Paul Goldschmidt, 1b, Cardinals
Goldschmidt chased the Triple Crown in the NL for a long time, eventually finishing with a batting average of .317, 35 home runs and 115 RBI while leading the National League in sprints (.578) and OPS (.981). Goldschmidt, two-time MVP runner-up and three-time finalist before 2022, is looking for the first MVP award of his 12-year career.
Nolan Arenado, 3B, Cardinals
Arenado and teammate Goldschmidt, who reached the MVP final, were the fellow baseball duo of 2022. Arenado hit 0.293 with 30 home runs and 103 RBIs while playing his regular star defense at third base, winning the glove award Tenth consecutive gold. But can he add the award for the best player in his first career to it? He’s been in the top five three times and in the top ten five times but has never won.
Mane Machado, 3B, Padres
Machado hit 0.298 with 32 home points and 102 RBIs in his second consecutive season an All-Star for Padres. He led the NL in Wins Above Replacement – 7.4 WAR, per FanGraphs, ahead of Arenado’s 7.3, Paul Goldschmidt and Freddie Freeman’s 7.1. With Padres absent fellow superstar Fernando Tates Jr., Machado led them past the season. The best player in the position five times, and he is looking to win the award for the first time.
Stop Dylan, RHP, White Sox
The 26-year-old Cease is built to his 2021 breakout with a 2022 best for the White Sox, going 14-8 with a 2.20 ERA (second in the AL for Justin Verlander) and 227 strokes, more than he was last year. The Cease season included a record streak of 14 consecutive starts allowing no more than one run earned from May 29 to August 11.
Alec Manoah, RHP, Blue Jays
After a great junior season in 2021, Manoah did better as a sophomore. The 24-year-old right-hander went 16-7 with a 2.24 ERA — third best in the AL — and 180 strokes. Manoah went 4-0 with a 0.88 ERA in September to lead the Blue Jays to the AL Wild Card pier.
Justin Verlander, RHP, Astros
The ageless Verlander had another dominant season for the Astros when he was 39 years old in 2022 – his first season after Tommy John’s surgery, no less. Verlander won the MLB ERA crown with a score of 1.75, and led the AL with 18 wins. He added 185 penalties to bring his career total to 3,198, the most among active shooters. Verlander is looking for a Cy Young award for the third time in his career, which would make him the 11th bowler to win three times.
Sandy Alcantara, RHP, Marlins
Alcantara was the kind of workhorse you rarely see in baseball anymore. The Ace Marlins have thrown six full games – more than any bowler since Chris Seal in 2016 and more than any other gamer. Team It was in 2022. Alcantara went 14-9 and scored a 2.28 ERA in the Major League – a high of 228 2/3 innings. He made seven or more innings in 13 consecutive rounds from May 11 to July 15, the longest such streak by any pitcher since the 2014 season.
The 2021 World Champion was just as good in 2022 – and maybe even better. Fried went 14-7 with a 2.48 ERA and 170 strikes in his first All-Star season, and was instrumental in leading the Braves past the Mets to their fifth consecutive NL East title, with a 2.21 ERA in nine starts in August and September.
Julio Urías, LHP, Dodgers
With Los Angeles losing Loker Buehler and Clayton Kershaw for significant periods of the year, Urreas has been consistent as the rock as the best baseball team of the regular season. The 26-year-old left-winger won the NL ERA with a 2.16 ERA for the Dodgers with 111 wins. A year after leading the Majors with 20 wins and taking Cy Young’s votes for the first time, Urías went 17-7 in 2022 with 166 strikes.
Stephen Cowan, LF, The Guardians
Hitting contact Kwan made him likable early in the season, and he has continued to do so throughout the year. He booked the season with AL Rookie of the Month awards in April and September.
Julio Rodriguez, CF, Mariners
J-Rod, AL Rookie’s favorite of the year, was instantly one of the most electric baseball players and sparked the Mariners in their first post-season appearance since 2001. Rodriguez hit 0.284 with 28 home runs, 25 base steals and 147 OPS+ on A tall with a stellar defense in the middle of the field. Madeleine Rochman, C, The Orioles

Brendan Donovan, UTIL, Cardinals
Donovan has played all over the field for the NL Central Champions – the 25-year-old has appeared in every ground position and both in the rookie corner in his rookie season, winning the Golden Glove for his diverse defensive efforts. Donovan also hit 0.281 and scored 0.394 based on the St. Louis percentage.
Michael Harris II, CF, Braves
The Braves both own the top winners of the 2022 NL Rookie of the Year – one hitter, and one pitcher. Harris is No. 1. The 21-year-old stole the show at the central field of the NL East Champions after being called up at the end of May, hitting 0.297 with 19 home points, 20 stolen bases and 135 OPS+ while playing a superb outside defence. Harris led the rookies in the NL with 5.3 WAR, according to the Baseball Reference.
Spencer Strider, RHB, Braves
While Harris was patrolling the field for Atlanta, Strider was beating the hitters on the hill. The 24-year-old flamethrower went 11-5 with 2.67 ERA and 202 strokes, the most rookie bowler since U Darvish in 2012. Strider started the season at the Bulls but moved to Duran Braves at the end of the season. May – and was equally dominant in both roles. His 16 hits on September 1 against the Rockies were the most hits of any bowler in a game of the season.
Terry Francona, Guardians
Tito led the Guardians to a record 92-70 and the AL Central title in his 10th year as their manager. Cleveland achieved postseason in six of Francona’s 10 seasons, and 2022 was his fourth title.
One of the biggest upsets was the Orioles in 2022, finishing 83-79 in Hyde’s fourth season as coach after 110 losses in 2021. This was Baltimore’s first winning season since 2016. The O’s have lost more than 100 games every game. The last three full seasons before its transformation in 2022.
Servais took the Mariners into post-season for the first time since 2001, ending a 20-year drought that was the longest not only in the MLB, but of any of the four major sports leagues in North America. This was his second consecutive 90-win season in Seattle under Servier.
Roberts led the Dodgers to a franchise record of 111 wins in 2022, the fourth most in a single season and the most of any team since his 116 wins in the 2001 Mariners. It was Roberts’ fourth season to rack up 100 wins and his sixth NL West title in seven years as the Dodgers manager.
Showalter took over the Mets and promptly led them past the season for the first time since 2016. New York won 101 games in Showalter’s first season with the Mets, the second-most in franchise history after only the legendary 1986 World Championship team.
The Mets led the NL East nearly all season, but under Snitker’s leadership, the 2021 World Series champions are back to capture the division for the fifth time in a row in ’22 – including a decisive sweep for the Mets at the end of the regular season. The Braves’ 101 victory was the biggest in a single season since 2003, when they also won 101.
