DACA – At least 37 people were killed and at least 100 were injured in a fire that broke out in a crowded boat early Friday in south Bangladesh. The fire broke out in the middle of the Sukanda River near the city of Jalalabad on its way from the capital Dhaka to Barguna.
It is estimated that there were at least 500 people in the three-story boat and some who jumped into the water and tried to save themselves drowned.
– We recovered 37 bodies. The death toll could rise. Most died in the fire, while others drowned while jumping into a river, “said Moinul Islam, a local police chief who told AFP.
An elderly woman who survived the crash told AFP that most people were asleep at the time of the fire and did not know the whereabouts of her grandson who had accompanied her on the trip.
“We were sleeping on a mat on the ground deck. My nine-year-old grandson Naeem was with me. Jumped into the river. I do not know what happened to him. “
Firefighter Kamal Hossain Puyan said the fire in the engine room was suspected to have spread rapidly. The boat burned in the water for at least an hour.
