The Big Ten has already been full of surprises this week, and Thursday’s second round of play really delivered the drama as it included an epic Michigan meltdown, a dominant win at Iowa State, a close shave for Sparty and a real hit with Penn State down Ohio State. We still have the quarter-finals, semi-finals and the title game on the calendar in the coming days.
Penn State’s win in Day Two came as the biggest surprise, as the Nittany Lions lost twice to the Buckeyes in the regular season. They trailed by as much as 13 points and trailed by more than 33 minutes of action, but closed the match with a 71-68 win. They will play No. 3 ranked Bordeaux in the quarter-finals late on Friday after they have already tied for the most wins in a single tournament after a single season since 2011.
Friday will also be a chance to catch the big dogs in play with all of the league’s top five seed including top seed Illinois, who begins the quarterfinals with a showdown against ninth seed Indiana. The Hoosiers are teetering on the bubble and desperately need a good win – but they lost to Illini by 17 in their only regular season showdown.
